As the world faces unprecedented challenges, particularly the ongoing refugee crisis, it has become clear that integration into the workforce is essential for helping refugees rebuild their lives. With this in mind, we embarked on the Welcome Work project, driven by a shared vision of creating inclusive and supportive work environments within the construction sector.
The construction industry in Europe is currently experiencing a significant labour shortage, with millions of positions needing to be filled over the coming years. We recognised this as both a challenge and an opportunity—an opportunity to bridge the gap between refugees seeking employment and an industry in dire need of skilled workers. Our project is designed to address this need by providing tailored resources and training that help refugees find their footing in a new country while contributing positively to their host communities.
Our approach is multifaceted. We will the Welcome Work Starter Kit, a comprehensive resource for vocational education and training (VET) providers. This kit is designed to equip educators with the knowledge and skills needed to guide refugees towards rewarding careers in the construction industry.
Another cornerstone of our project is the Mobile Training Programme. This programme is particularly close to our hearts because it addresses the real, everyday needs of refugees. Many refugees arrive with little more than their mobile phones, so we will design a mobile app that provides on-the-go resources, focusing on the construction sector. This app offers practical advice, educational content, and a pathway to employment opportunities—all tailored to the unique challenges that refugees face.
But it’s not just about educating refugees. We believe that true integration requires a welcoming environment. That’s why we will create the Good Practice Compendium for construction employers. This compendium offers actionable strategies, real-life examples, and a wealth of information on how to create a workplace that is not just diverse, but truly inclusive. By educating employers on the benefits of hiring refugees and how to support them, we aim to foster work environments where everyone can thrive.
Our project is more than just a series of tools and resources; it’s a commitment to making a tangible difference. We are collaborating with key stakeholders across Europe, including refugee advocacy groups, construction industry associations, and educational institutions, to ensure that our resources reach those who need them most. We believe that by working together, we can create lasting change—helping refugees to build new lives while simultaneously strengthening the construction industry.
